Quick Search is doing the wrong thing in Threaded mode (View|Threads)

Quick Search isn't doing the right thing when typing something in a folder that
has messages hidden (e.g. via Unread Only or similar).
Quick Search should only apply to the currently visible messages. So if I, for
instance, use Threads with Unread only, doing a Quick Search should only look in
the messages that are viewed using that option.

Quick search is not on a particular view, but on the selected folder.

I noticed, but it doesn't make sense that it searches on stuff you have already
filtered out (because you do not want to see it).
If you are searching for a particular message, there are a number of ways you
can do that, you can filter out stuff using the View menu and you can do Search
or Quick Search. If you have for example, all unread messages hidden, and you
type some characters into Quick Search, the only sensible thing for it to do
would be to search for those messages that are visible in the view. CC putterman

Jennifer, what's your opinion on this? I always saw this as a folder search
rather than searching the view you were currently in. I know that we can't do
threading, but perhaps if you are in an unread only view when you start, it
keeps you in an unread only view after you search? Is that possible?

It already does that. When you come out of quick search it keeps you in the
view, you started with (in this case unread).

I can give you an example of a simple situation:
I am trying to organize my mailbox, and I have lots of read and unread mail
mixed. So I check "View > Unread only". Now when I enter something into the
Quick Search box, I expect the criterion "unread only" to be true because I just
checked it in the "View" menu. I don't understand why this would be impossible
to implement.
Also, if I recall correctly, Outlook (which has this Quick Search feature since
long ago) behaves like this.

Navin, I was referring to the situation hwaara just described.

It is possible, search only on the keys within the view.

Well, great!
I think I would tend to agree with Håkan on this one. If you have a particular
View set, I would tend to expect that the search in 3 pane would obey that View
as well.
I don't know how technically difficult it is for the different Views though?

I am not sure if this belongs here but I have the following problem with Mozilla
2003030108 on Windows XP and also in Linux (should OS be changed to All?):
1. Set View > Messages to Unread
2. Use quick search bar
3. It finds messages just fine
4. Click Clear on Quick Search bar
5. Switch to another folder
6. Switch back to folder on which you used quick search
7. Notice that View > Messages is set to All insted of Unread as it should be
I think that quick search should search and display all messages in a folder
even if they are not displayed. but when you click Clear and return to that
folder the selected view should be the same as before the quick search was
performed and should not change to All.

The bug described in comment #13 is the one that I'd like to report, too.
But IMHO it does not fit the initial bug report. Someone (am I allowed to do
it?) should close the current bug, because the behaviour described in the
initial post is working for me like desired (Mozilla 1.4/linux). For the other
bug (comment #13) a new report should be opened that can be found more simple by
a better matching short description.

As of 1.4, the View|Messages menu was split into View|Messages and View|Threads.
In addition, the View|Messages menu was mapped directly to the MailViews
dropdown: to set one means you are setting the other. (Previously, these could
be set seperately.) If a MailView is set, the messages cannot be threaded.
If a MailView is set, QuickSearch is applied only to the messages that are shown
as a result of the MailView. (I gather this didn't used to be the case.) So
for flat views, you do get the two levels of filtering applied, as desired.
(Altho, see bug 189493.)
If the folder is being viewed in a Threaded mode (View|Threads), then the
MailView has to be All. When QuickSearch is set, the filtering provided by the
Thread is turned off, and the QuickSearch is applied to All the messages.
Therefore, the problem in this bug's original report does still exist. This is
probably related to bug 135326 -- I'm tempted to say that bug blocks this one,
but I'm not sure that's true.
The problem described by Jure Repinc in comment 13 sounds like bug 189007, which
has been fixed in 1.5.
Updating summary; unsetting milestone.

So quick search:
* it appears works as designed for View|Thread - but could be improved
* works fine for View|Messages
Functionality and consistency will be improved when quick search works the same
for all views. I'll hazard this depends on bug 135326 - which describes this as
difficult to deliver. Setting priority to enhancement.
BTW, the TB equivalent is bug 265625.
Severity: major → enhancement
Depends on: 135326

TB fixed 2005-10-12, see bug 263180 comment 19
"sort by threads if we go into quick search in a VF while threaded ... this makes it so we retain the threadedness when going into and out of a quick
search while in a threaded VF."
"don't thread quick search results if we're grouped .. we were going into threaded mode when doing a quick search in a grouped view..."
