Details

More than once I have quickly dragged down the File menu to close a window, and accidentally hit exit, or hit alt-q, zapping my whole session. This is counter intuitive. If I say exit in the news reader, I want the news reader to go away only. If I hit exit in a window, I expect it to close only those windows related to the window I chose exit in. Excuse me if this has been discussed before.

I'm going to go ahead and mark this as invalid - this doesn't appear to be a seamonkey (communicator 5.0) bug as the word 'exit' does not appear in communicator 5.0 (if I remember correctly - don't have a linux box in front of me right now, sorry!). btw, that's expected behavior - you want 'close' and not 'exit'. 'close' means 'close this window'; exit means 'exit the application' that is, close all windows and terminate netscape.
