Really? I find the Clear button in mailnews quicksearch useful. Without it, it
would take several clicks/keypresses to go back to listing the entire folder
after clicking a message.

Really. Every time debian upgrades mozilla on me, I go back to the jar file and
dike it out again.
Strangely, the explanation I wrote when filing this bug isn't here, but I think
I can summarize it quickly. It is redundant (although convenient for you--I've
never used it) and it is large. In fact, it leaves only 2em of text in my search
box, which makes the while feature of questionable use.
Perhaps we could pref the silly thing (and the whole quicksearch feature), but
that seems extreme. I don't think that having Clear helps usability, except
perhaps for expert users who won't waste time wondering whether to click it or
to delete the text in the box.

I run at 800x600 and barely have enough room to see a resonable amount of the
subject, sender, and date, but the quicksearch textbox is still three times as
large as it needs to be in order to be useful. Even if I make the thread pane
as wide as possible without making text messages in the message pane wrap, the
quicksearch textbox still has plenty of room.

I'm not making this up. My window is default size for Netscape 4 on Unix boxes
(760px).

The fonts shown in the screenshot appear unusually large to me -- on my screen,
the message text font and status bar font are about the same number of pixels as
shown in the screenshot, but the thread and folder pane content, column headers,
and quicksearch bar text are much smaller.
If Reporter is using the same fonts now, I imagine the problem is a little worse
with current releases having the MailView dropdown, which is even wider than the
Advanced button used to be.
The Clear button could be made narrower, just wide enough to hold the word --
since there no longer is an Advanced button, it's no longer a question of making
buttons appear the same width. I wouldn't want to lose it, tho.
