Can't run XPAppViewer.app or viewer.app without above component.
What version of the MacOS are you running? We require at least 8.1 (and/or Appearance Manager 1.0.2)
We are not seeing this problem on our 8.1 test machine here (all the development machines have been updated to 8.5). The only guess I can make at this point is that you've installed some software that replaced the Appearance Extension with an older version.
