The initial impression of mail/news is going to be determined by the initial
state of the UI. It should be as simple as possible, and everything should be
readable. Our current default configuration is terrible, there are too many
columns and they aren't all readable. Plus we use icons in some of the columns
that are essentially meaningless.
We should start with a simple set up, say
Unread Date From Subject
Advanced users can turn on more columns. We should also make sure they right
widths for these columns are chosen for ease of use and readability.

I believe this belongs in MailNews, not Browser; reassigning accordingly.

yes this is mailnews bug. Also this one is talking about a couple of UI
issues together. It should be break up into different bugs. reassign to jglick
to see whether these are mostly known problem ( I think so, at least).

Yes, agreed, we need better defaults. 4.5+ default columns (I don't remember
4.0x) were Subject, Unread, Sender, Date, Priority. Adding polish keyword too.

I have in the spec:
http://gooey/client/5.0/specs/mail/messengermessenger.html#Thread
Default columns and order are as follows: Thread, Subject, Presence Icon (i
believe this one is out for beta 1, just like the AB), Sender or Recipient
(depending on folder selected), Date, Column Widget (control to change what
columns are displayed).
If we want to add "Unread" (this is the green diamond column, correct?) and
"Priority" also, that is probably fine, but brings us up to 7 default columns.

I think the spec'd behavior is fine. Let's make Unread and Priority non-default
columns. Reassigning to putterman. Would like to have this for B1 to get
feedback, but wouldn't hold for it.

Luis - can you create a new profile and access mail? In the 3-pane mail window,
can you see what the default columns are? (ie. date, subject). Pls list your
findings here for Windows. Thanks.

Luis - no longer need to do anything on this bug.
I think it's the same as http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44669. The
other bug has the more up-to-date items from the spec so I'll mark this a dup of
that one even though this bug report came first.
