Alpha channel is now thresholded, ie a 1 bit transparency mask. We have plans to implement full 8 bit level alpha as soon as some other image handling issues are implemented. -pnunn

I wanted it to land in M8, but I need some FE help and it looks like it will land in M9, and perhaps only on Win and Mac. Win now works except for scaled images. Thresholded alpha works now on all platforms. -pn
