it ain't no beta-stopper, but after chatting with pavlov, it's one of those,
"gee, it'd be so much better..." situations. basically, linux file picker (aka,
the Open File dialog) needs to redesigned to better, faster, stronger... :-)
an example of where the current one sucks is that dot files aren't automatically
displayed --see bug 23563.
feel free to add other reasons why the current dialog sucks here --this bug'll
act as a tracker/enhancement request.

Another issue, from bug 26203, "filename forgotten when choosing 'save link
as...' from context menu" ... if the user navigates to another directory,
the filename suggestion is forgotten. That bites.
A redesign would also be the perfect time to integrate some new functionality
like bug 24625, "[RFE] Add MRU for folders/directories to File Save dialogs",
M16, to let the user leap to recently used directories rather than navigating
each time, useful for both Open and Save.

Also, if the user tries to save a file to a directory where the save will
fail because the user does not have write permission for that directory,
no alert is given - see bug 23821.
In the WinNT picker, an alert is given as soon as a directory is chosen
where the save would fail, rather than after the save is attempted.
This would be a handy enhancement for Linux.

pavlov, lets talk before you start on this. I have some ideas about using the
xpcom/io/nsDirectoryService.

adding a bunch o' bug dependencies... these are necessarily 'blocked' by this
bug per se, but the functionality they cover would sure be mo' bettah. :-)

Bug 24719, "allow user to enter a directory & press enter in the gtk save as
dialog box", M15 ... to switch to that directory, remaining in the dialog
rather than [Ok]ing it, seems like a natural to fit into the redesign if it
isn't fixed beforehand.

Bug 7840, "[RFE] Ability to designate default directory for FTP downloads", M15
apparently in use with 4.x on Macs, but useful anywhere, might also be something
to consider for the redesign, if it isn't seen to first.

new file picker is done. Bug 6783 needs to be completed before you will start
seeing the new file picker. If you want to preview it, you can load
chrome://global/content/filepicker.xul though.
