(Whiteboard: [Perf]: seamonkey scrolls 2X as slow)

Seamonkey 99028: Go to my favorite page that doesn't work www.cnn.com, or any pahe loaded with content. Click on a down arrow and hold it. You should see the content visibly race by before your eyes. It does! Now do the same thing (ON ANY PLATFORM) with IE4 or Nova. The scrolling is in each case is, by my crude measurements, 2X as fast. Also, for the same reason I'm sure, if you grab the scroll bar and zip up/down with it, Seamonkey flashes while it tries to layout the new content. IE and Nova scroll fast enough such that they don't have to flash. One last thing, there is also a platform disparity here. It might just be an OS thing though. All like products (re: IE, Nova, Seamonkey) scroll twice as fast on Windows than on Mac/Linux. That is to say that although Nova on Windows is 2X as fast as Seamonkey on Windows it (Nova) is 4X as fast as Seamonkey on Mac/Linux. Get it?

Removed the [PP] tag and reassigned to troy because this is not a platform- specific issue. The bug is that Seamonkey is twice as slow as Nova or IE ("ON ANY PLATFORM", Claudius wrote). Then, there is a platform-specific part to the bug report where it's noted that Mac and Unix are twice as slow as Windows. But everybody knows that: it's not just for the scrolling, it's all across the board and it's an architectural problem that I think lays in the View Manager and Widget.

claudius: I just checked in some image rendering improvements on Linux that improve scrolling alot. I have a feeling at this time this is a linux specific bug, so im marking it so. reassign to ramiro@netscape.com marking Linux.

i fixed this already. marking fixed.

Kudos. It is faster now. It's not fast or anything but by my crude estimations I would judge the scrolling performance to be on par with the overall application performance. That just means there is nothing special about scrolling now. Marking VERIFIED for Seamonkey Linux Build 99032911
