On new message window, hitting TAB key on a textfield
(To:, CC:, etc) moves input focus to the next field,
but, XIM conversion is not turned on until clicking
the field.
To reprodce:
1. run dist/bin/mozilla in Japanese locale.
2. Bring a new message window from mail client.
2. In To: field, turn on XIM conversion. With kinput
on Linux, press Shift-space. On Solaris, press
Control-space. Be sure to you can input Japanese
text in that field. Then,
3. Hit TAB to move to the next field.
4. You cannot type Japanese text until you click
the text field.

1. Is this also happen to browser, e.g. html forms which have mutliple text
field ?
2. Could you spec out what is the missing pieces for XIM to turn on in here ? Is
that because some of the window have not been created or no window get focus yet
?
I don't think this is nhotta's area. If this is a generic text field issue, we
then should reassign to buster@netscape.com. However, make sure you explain what
is missing from XIM before reassign to him.
Reassign back to tajima@eng.sun.com for more info.

A similar problem happens on Windows but I'm not sure
if this the same problem as on Linux.
On Windows, every time you use "ALT + `" to turn ON and OFF
the IME, the focus shifts to the "File" menu -- you can see
the highlight on the File menu when you do ALT + `, this basically
disables certain key actions like "Tab"-bing through multilple
forms.
This problem is Bug 28852.
Yu can actually type into the current field but Tabbing does
not work because of Bug 28852. You need to click into a form
field to get the focus back into the form window and then
tabbing will work whether or not Japanese Input mode is on
until you do the next "ALT + `".
The description here makes me feel that we might be seeing
a similar but different problem on Unix.
(On Windows, this does not happen on any of the other Global IMEs
because they don't use "ALT + some_key" action to turn ON
and OFF IME in these other input modules.)

As long as I tested with the attached html file which
creates 5 textfields, TAB grouping works perfectly
with textfield widgets. XIM Japanese convetion mode remains ON when I switch
from one textfield to
another text field. However, this does not work from
an textfield to html composing window like in mail
composing window. This looks very similar to 17419, so the problem might be
generic to html editor widgets.

Changing QA contact to ji. Looks like this kind of problem
is most often encountered in mail windows and ji would be best
to test this.
QA Contact: momoi → ji
Using today's build (2000030108), on the plain text mail compose window,
I'm able to tab from To: field to Subject field while XIM conversion remains on
and have no problem to enter Japanese in the text fields.
But When I tab from Subject field to mail body, an extra tab is inserted to the
place where the cursor is pointing to and XIM conversion seems not working even
XIM status window shows it is turned on. And I need to click on the mail body
area to get the XIM conversion really working.
