I would really like to see my address book on the sidebar, like it is in Outlook express. This makes starting e-mail much easier. It would not take up space, since it minimizes to a tiny line.

Candice, could you lend a hand here?

Candice is on vacation until the 20th; cc'ing Seth. Attached is a patch for a bare minimum addressbook pane. Lets you switch the book you're viewing. Double clicking on a name opens a message compose window with the e-mail address(es) of the item(s) selected prefilled, and the subject field focused. Drag and drop functionality is also there, although that currently doesn't seem to work correctly for addressbook. Right now only the Name column is shown, for simplicity; users will be able to add more columns after the outliner conversion (see below). This is a great feature for transitioning Outlook Express users, who are accustomed to having a Contacts pane. More functionality -- i.e. context menus (for both this panel and the standalone addressbook) -- is coming soon, but I'd like first to convert addressbook to outliner, which I'll work on after checking this fix in.

adding jglick as this will be a change to the UI.

But I think I like how Blake has the menu to select an AB instead. Agree this would be a great feature to have. Thoughts on the buttons? Green arrow creates a new Mail Compose already addressed to selected contacts. Blue plus lets you add to the AB (Card Pane opens). Red X lets you remove an AB entry.
Looks good. I think a red minus would be a little clearer to me. I wonder what we'd do in Classic? Assuming we do go with the menu approach, how do you think it should be layed out, in relation to the toolbar?

Hmm. I'm torn. I think they should be on the top. That's too bad, because I liked having the dropdown and the tree 'connnected'. As an aside, we definitely want these buttons, right? I just noticed that OE doesn't have any.
>As an aside, we definitely want these buttons, right? I just noticed that OE >doesn't have any. I guess it depends on if we think this funtionality is something people will want to have. Will people simply want to be able to view the contents of an AB, and launch New messages from the list, or do we think Adding/Deleting (and potentially Editing) entries from the Sidebar Tab is also beneficial?
I think it's useful functionality to have, but at this point I'd like to: - check this in - convert addressbook to outliner - add the toolbar - add the context menu (which the user can also delete from) I'll add the toolbar, but I'd rather focus on converting to outliner first. I'll leave this bug open after checking in the current patch. This is the last feature I need to put my mom on Mozilla :-)
Thanks for all the mockups, btw.
Sounds good. Agree the buttons are icing on the cake. :-) If you'd like to do the buttons in the future, file a bug again Marlon Bishop for some decent icons (and cc me). Thanks for working on this.
sr=sspitzer blake, thanks for working with jglick on this. jglick, when you add this to the spec, can you link to it here?
Unity-Of-Interface (TM) -> will be nice if there is a parallel with IM, as it will consolidate familiarity.
cc: rudman as a fyi for documentation. qa contact to esther as this now would have to be tested and have testcases written for.

OK, after some searching through the UI, I found out how to get the Address Book on the SideBar (In SideBar, select the Tabs, Customize My Sidebar..., Recommended and there was the Address Book). So after adding it, I found on windows has an email column, but I don't see the email addresses listed and the column header and the email address column header changes to screename when resizing sidebar of clicking on column header. I'll log new separate bug for this but I need clarification whetherthe email column should or shouldn't be there per comment on 8-7 by Blake. Changing QA to nbaca too.
More investigation shows the email addresses are there, I expanded the width of the sidebar. However the column header does change to screen name and doesn't switch back unless you exit app and relaunch. Ninoschka can log a new bug for this. Verifying this bug as feature is in on mac, linux and windows build 2001-09-04
