From Ben Bucksch: I think, it is not desirable to have bugs reported to newsgroups. Explanations can be found at <news:38D7DB45.5FF89676@netscape.com> ("Re: M14 thoughts" by Daniel Veditz in n.p.m.seamonkey) and <news:38D9A049.A5200665@bucksch.org> ("Several answers" by me in n.p.m.mailnews). Can we add such a statement to the charter <http://www.mozilla.org/community.html>? From Frank Hecker: I think this is a reasonable suggestion. I suggest adding the following text (with links as noted) to the section "Ground Rules", as the lasty item (before the paragraph beginning "If you're new to Usenet...". Report bugs in Bugzilla, not in the Mozilla forums If you encounter a bug with Mozilla, please take the time to file a report in Bugzilla about it. Mozilla developers do not all have time to follow all the Mozilla-related forums on a regular basis, and if you just post a bug report to a newsgroup or mailing list then it may not reach anyone who can actually do anything about the bug. By reporting the bug through Bugzilla you ensure that it will receive a higher level of attention, and will be tracked along with other bugs. See the bug writing guidelines for information on how to submit high-quality bug reports. Also note that you can use Bugzilla to report problems with the mozilla.org servers (including Bugzilla, Tinderbox, and Bonsai) or to make suggestions to mozilla.org staff, by filing your bug against the product "mozilla.org".
Would it be possible for either the below link to Bugzilla, or another link, to point to the Bugzilla Helper (http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/bug-form.html) instead? It has been found that bugs submitted using the helper are less likely to be dupes and are of higher quality all round. Gerv
I like this idea as well. But, I'd also like to see the text edited to encourage people to write good bugs before we send them to bugzilla. Maybe send them to Bugzilla Helper, recent experience suggests that this results in a much better quality of bug.

OK, here is a suggested rewording of the text: Report bugs in Bugzilla, not in the Mozilla forums If you encounter a problem with Mozilla, don't post a message in the forums, please take the time to file a formal bug report about it. Mozilla developers do not all have time to follow all the Mozilla-related forums on a regular basis, and if you just post a bug report to a newsgroup or mailing list then it may not reach anyone who can actually do anything about the problem. By reporting the problem through Bugzilla you ensure that it will receive a higher level of attention, and will be tracked along with other reported problems. Also note that you can use Bugzilla to report problems with the mozilla.org servers (including Bugzilla, Tinderbox, and Bonsai) or to make suggestions to mozilla.org staff, by filing a mozilla.org "bug". Note that the above text does not include a link to Bugzilla itself, but rather to the Bugzilla bug helper page, which contains a step by step description of the bug reporting process. Also, I've included a link directly to the Bugzilla page for reporting mozilla.org-related issues. (Including the mozilla.org issue may confuse some people, and so I'd be glad to drop the last sentence, starting "Also note...".)
Seeing as mitchell liked the idea, I've implemented this, apart from the last sentence. Hey! I get to mark a bug FIXED! ;-) <dances round room> Gerv
