The DOM Level 2 defines the attributes "rowIndex", "sectionRowIndex" and "cells" as readonly, IMO it's clear that "rowIndex" and "sectionRowIndex" should be readonly but it's possible that the "cells" attribute is writeable for compatibility reasons.

Seems like all this is for backwards compatibility...
