IMHO, I don't think we need the Mark button. Only high frequency items really belong on a Toolbar. I don't think Mark is one of them. In 4.x, the Delete button is replaced with Mark when a news group/server is selected. I think just removing the Delete button is fine.

In reading newsgroups, Mark is used quite frequently to mark the entire newsgroup as read or to mark a certain thread as read.

If folks feel that Mark is a commonly used item, I'm fine with leaving it in (toggle with Delete from Mail). I believe it was agreed quite a while back that we won't have Mark? Hence, I believe, Shuang never created a graphic for this item. Maybe Putterman can give us his view on this one (since he uses newsgroups frequently) or we can post the question to the newsgroup? Either decision is fine with me.

Spoke with Putterman and Lchiang and both think that this is used alot when reading news messages so the Mark button should be present when news items are selected.

Icon for Mark will need to be created. Fill a bug again me for this one.

Bug 41311 was the bug to create the Modern mark icon.

This is FIXED. The mark button exists (correct icon or not) in both Classic and Modern, on all latest builds on Mac OS 9.1, Mandrake 7.2 with KDE and Win2K. Marking as such.
