summary pretty much sums it up :) ... the "sponsored links" table should be at the bottom and the whole right-side column is missing
Status: NEW → ASSIGNED
Thanks. Quite a mess, isn't it. However, this is due to the fact that LAYER/ILAYER is not in place for 5.0. If I nuke all the layer stuff from the page, then what is left lays out well (aside from one known table problem involving the use of tables as colored stripes (too wide)). I think vidur@netscape.com owns LAYER. CC:ing ekrock@netscape.com because I think he owns bug #3688 ("Get top content sites to respect mozilla/5.0 user agent") and this one is a variation of that theme (actually, the content's correct, but should they be moving to DOM 1 for 5).
Summary: tables overlapping, not displaying → [LAYER] tables overlapping, not displaying
Hmmm...my previous analysis of this page showed that we could actually lay out the layers content (we have limited support for the LAYER and ILAYER tag for layout purposes), but zdnet didn't serve it to us because of our user agent. Note that we still don't support the document.layers array, though.
Sorry. I may have jumped the gun because I thought there was almost no support for LAYER (at this time). You are correct that zdnet is serving different (downversion) content to the 5.0 viewer. You can try 5.0 on a page served to 4.5 at this URL: http://qsilver.queensu.ca/~buslib/4172/www_zdnet_com.html The right hand column appears, but the 'Expand Ad' feature does not work, and there is still a jumble of overlapping tables/layers in the main body of the page. Cheers, John

Well, this is a 100% duplicate of bug #3996 which is www.zdnet.com and LAYER/ILAYER. Marking duplicate. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 3996 ***
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
Verifying bug duplicate of 3996.
Moving all [LAYER] bugs to Evangelism component for tracking and open-source evangelism by mozilla community members of sites that need to upgrade to support web standards such as HTML 4.0 (instead of LAYER/ILAYER) and the W3C DOM (instead of Nav4 document.layers[] or IE document.all()). Sites should be lobbied to do the upgrade using the email templates that are linked to from http://www.mozilla.org/newlayout/bugathon.html#layerbugs . When a site's owner has confirmed receipt of the message requesting an upgrade, the bug should be marked with the keyword evangelized to indicate that evangelism for that bug is complete. When the site finishes the upgrade and supports standards, the bug should be closed.

Closing all Evangelism bugs where no evangelism is needed because page has been fixed, site is internal to Netscape, report is a DUP, or bug report is no longer appropriate for evangelism for any other reason.
