I've seen this before, but never realized what caused it.
Bug 98479 is related, is this maybe a bug of 98479?

This could be fixed by fixing bug 62495, bug 98546, or bug 12764.

but not for me. If the mouse moves at all during the click, even one pixel, only the first half of the URL becomes selected.

Moving Netscape owned 0.9.9 and 1.0 bugs that don't have an nsbeta1, nsbeta1+, topembed, topembed+, Mozilla0.9.9+ or Mozilla1.0+ keyword. Please send any questions or feedback about this to adt@netscape.com. You can search for "Moving bugs not scheduled for a project" to quickly delete this bugmail.

I've seen several Bugzilla users refer to this behavior as "random" in other bugs (not just in dups). If they can't figure out how to work around it (hold the mouse very steady while you click on the location bar), I'd expect Netscape users to be even more frustrated. I think the low number of dups is due to how difficult it is to figure out steps that always reproduce the bug.
One of the most irritating but not so enough to bother bugs :-) Actually Platform,OS->All
OS: Windows NT → All
Hardware: PC → All
This could also be worked around a bit with (rfe)bug 52784.
Similar: bug 23784, "double-clicking doesn't select entire word (if mouseMoved)".
Yeah, this is a duplicate of bug 23784. Its a general selection problem, not specific to the url bar. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 23784 ***
